Gold Coins Commemorate First Spouses

The coins commemorating Louisa Adams and the time that she spend as First Lady of the United States  are so far the likely the scarcest of all of the gold coin that the U.S. Mint created to honor presidential spouses. The Louisa Adams First Spouse gold coins were first made available to the public in May of 2008 and were the sixth in the series.

At the end of last month, the U.S. Mint announced the number of Louisa Adams gold coins that were sold: 4,223 of the uncirculated and 6,950 of the proof. This is great news for those who collect gold coins such as these because last week was the time that these particular gold coins would be available to the public. If there are so few of them around, then those who have gold coins bearing the image of Louisa Adams can expect these gold coins to increase in value.

We are not sure why there is so much interest in the Louisa Adams gold coins, but we can tell you a little bit about why she stands out. Although anyone who becomes president of the United States must be born in this country, there are not such rules for the spouse of the president. Louisa Adams is the only presidential spouse (so far) to have been born outside of the U.S. She was born in London in 1775. John Quincy Adams married her after first taking an interest in her sister. For his part, John Adams was not overjoyed to have a foreign-born daughter-in-law, but eventually he came around.

While the Louise Adams gold coins are no longer available, the gold coins crafted to honor Letitia Tyler were launched last week as well. Letitia Tyler, sadly, did not live to see her husband complete his entire presidential term because she died in 1842. There will be another gold coin issued towards the end of this summer to honor President John Tyler's second wife, Julia.

While it must be exciting to acquire coins with the hopes that they will increase in value over time, some of you may also have gold coins that you think have reached their peak in value. Or even if they have not reached their full peak in value, you have decided that it is time to sell gold coins. You can sell your gold coins to an online gold buyer and get cash for gold.
